SECTION ONE: THE HOUSE

a. Styles: Cave; mud hut; rough wood dweling; flint house; timber house; stone; brick; “modern”

b. Structure

  • Foundations: pad / trench

  • Walls: cavity or solid: brick, block, stone, rendered, brick faced (wooden framed), glass

  • Roof: clay tiles; slate; concrete tiles; false slate; tar. Eaves, soffit board, fascia board

  • Floors: joists (Ibeams / wood beams / poured concrete / concrete blocks. Boards (chipboard / floorboard)

  • Holes in the house: Doors (internal / external / hollow / solid / glass / veneer), windows (sash / casement / swivelling) double / triple glazed; U values / toughened glass, services, lintels (rsj / concrete / wood)

c. Systems​

  • Plumbing: cold water (rising main / header tank); hot water (combination boiler / tank (vented / unvented); waste water; drainage from rain soakaway / cess pit or mains)

  • Electrical: lights / power feed; how to check your system; what happens when it “blows” (overload or fault)

  • Gas: not to be touched; smell and report

d. Internal fit out

  • Solid wall (supporting wall); stud wall (plasterboard); second fix (skirtings / architrave etc); ceilings doors; floor coverings

 

SECTION TWO: GETTING TO GRIPS WITH DIY
a. Tools
Hand tools: e.g. measures / hammers / screwdrivers / pliers / chisels / tapes / saws / spirit level / clamps
b. Common problems
Damp (rising / falling / condensation); drafts; leaks; handles; mould; bathroom grout
c. Practical jobs
Putting up shelves; putting up pictures; painting and decorating; changing plugs; changing taps; re-grouting

 

SECTION THREE: DEVELOPING YOUR SKILL WITH TOOLS

a. Power tools
e.g. cordless drill / chop saw / jig saw / sanders / planer / grinder

b. using your skill with tools

Put up some shelves; make a tool / stationery box
