We are recruiting for Retail Store Manager for our new store opening February 2018 in the Brighton area.


40 hours per week over 5 days out of 7. Salary negotiable. Starting date asap.


Job brief

We are looking for a results-driven retail store manager to be responsible for the overall store management. The successful candidate will be able to enhance customer satisfaction, meet sales and profitability goals, manage staff effectively and fly the flag for our social enterprise!




Reporting to the General Manager

  • Meet sales goals by training, motivating, mentoring and providing feedback to the team

  • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction through excellent service

  • Complete store administration and ensure compliance with policies and procedures both HR and H&S

  • Maintain outstanding store condition and visual merchandising standards

  • Report on buying trends, customer needs, product requests

  • Manage all store orders through to completion

  • Conduct personnel performance appraisals to assess training needs and build career paths

  • Deal with all issues that arise from staff or customers (complaints, grievances etc)

  • Additional store manager duties as needed

  • To support the business as an ambassador

  • Recruit and train a new opening team for your store


  • Proven successful experience as a retail manager

  • Customer management skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

The ideal candidate


You will have a strong track record within retail. Applicants can be store managers looking for a new role within in a socially responsible business or a deputy manager ready to step up to the next level.

An interest in recycling, carpentry and experience of basic power tools would be an advantage.


The ideal candidate will have experience of launching a new store opening and be a self-starter able to help set up and establish a new retail outlet.


Our Story

Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling Project (trading as The Wood Store) is a social enterprise that was established in 1998 to do something about the amount of reusable wood which was being sent to landfill. At that time no-one recycled wood - so builders and other waste wood producers had no option apart from throwing everything away in a skip. We now provide a comprehensive waste wood collection and recycling service for businesses in Brighton & Hove, and currently collect about 1 tonne of wood per day. We aim to reuse as much of the 'waste' as possible, either by selling it via our shop, the Wood Store, making it into items such as shelving and furniture, or turning it into firewood or woodchip. We are now part of a growing UK network of not-for-profit Social Enterprises, the National Community Wood Recycling Project, creating jobs and saving resources. Part of our work is to offer volunteer positions to local people who are looking for work experience and skills training.
